Safety Tips for the Rainy Season

Before disaster strikes, it is important that you be able to prepare items that are vital to have with you during times of typhoons. It is essential that you keep track of the latest updates of the typhoon as to where it’s heading and the intensity of it.

Make sure, your home is safe from everything else. Before the typhoon hits, do a thorough check up of your home, from your roof down to your drainage systems. Here are the before, during and after typhoon tips that you could apply at your home to make you and your family safe.

BEFORE THE TYPHOON

  1. As you conduct a thorough check up of your home, make sure that you check the ff:

    a. Roof – scout for holes where water may possibly enter. Seal them by using different kinds of sealants that suits your home. There are different types of this product water-based, eco-friendly, and works fast.

    b. Pipe leaks- Like roof repairs, there are different sealants that work on pipe leaks. They also come in different types that you could use.

    c. Drains – make sure that drains are clear to prevent any clogging.

    d. Check all the wires inside and outside the house. Turn off or unplug appliances that could get wet.

    e. Check everything that may be blown away due to strong winds. Try to move them to a safer place to prevent any accidents.

  2. Prepare flashlights, lantern, candles, extra batteries, matches or lighters where you can easily find them incase the power goes out during typhoons. If incase you’re using emergency lights, make sure they’re fully charged.
  3. Store enough food and water for you and your family to keep you going until power and things gets back to normal.
  4. Make sure to charge your cell phone before the typhoon strikes your area. In that way, if incase there’s an emergency, you’ll be able to contact and notify someone.

DURING THE TYPHOON

  1. Make sure to stay in-doors.
  2. Shut off main gas valve and switch.
  3. Stay away from glass windows
  4. Always have a radio to easily monitor the latest news for your area. If power goes out, there are emergency lights that have a portable radio for you to listen to the latest updates

AFTER THE TYPHOON

  1. Check those who are injured and contact emergency services to assist you.
  2. Check for damages inside and outside your home and ask for assistance. Do not touch fallen wires
  3. If incase your home was flooded, you can use several submersible pumps to help you lessen the water level in your home or inside your car.
  4. Do not turn on any appliance that may have been damaged or got wet during the typhoon, allow them to dry and have them checked by technicians before operating them again.
